Buses in the 60s by Brian Widdowson

Brian Widdowson’s Recollects the heady heights of bus travel in the 1960’s
I first visited Long Bennington in the 1960’s, shortly after I had met the girl I was to marry. I did not own a car; not very many people did at that time, and buses were my only means of transport. Compared with today, however, the bus service was fantastic. During the week villagers were easily able to travel to and from their work in Grantham or Newark. The last bus left Newark for Long Bennington, on weekdays, at about 9 o’clock? The last bus from Long Bennington to Newark left at around 9.30. On Saturdays it was possible to spend the day in Nottingham, or Lincoln and visit the cinema there, then travel back to Newark in time to catch the 10.45 bus to Long Bennington.
